Mountaineering

Photos and Notes on the Alps, Rockies, Pamirs, Pyrennes, Scotland and the Dolomites

The Haute Route

In the Summer of 1993 I and three fellow mountaineers tackled the Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt in the Pennine Alps. This famous high level mountain traverse over glaciers and several peaks over 12,000 feet high is a spectacular introduction to Alpine mountaineering. It crosses through France, Italy and Switzerland and can be completed via mountain huts in about 10 days.

The Lake District

Opposite: Paul Wilkinson and Dr. John Frankland on a winter ascent of Jack's Rake in 1994. I often get up to the Lake District in the winter and have some more good photos.

The Highlands of Scotland

I am in the process of climbing the Munros. Here I am on the summit of Sgurr Fiona (1,059m) during a winter traverse of An Teallach.

The Pamirs, Tadzhikistan in Central Asia

In 1991 I lead a caving and mountaineering expedition to some remote mountains near the Afghan border. The mountains were mainly composed of limestone with some gypsum beds but due to the high alpine environment cave development proved to be rather poor. The rugged terrain and wildlife, however made up for the lack of discoverable caves.
