River Deep-Mountain HighAn expedition with the Army Caving Association to descend the 1,000 metre deep cave Gouffre Berger in the Alps near Grenoble and climb western Europe's highest mountain, Mount Blanc. The Berger is one of the deepest caves in the world, while Mount Blanc at nearly 16,000 feet is only 50 miles away. They had to be ticked off in one expedition. Opposite is a photograph of The Hall of the Thirteen, the famous chamber containing thirteen massive stalagmites in the Gouffre Berger taken by myself and Hugh St Lawrence. |
